# Fathom Analytics

> Connect Fathom Analytics to measure website traffic, event conversions, and AI referrals in ChatFeatured

Connect Fathom Analytics to bring your site's traffic into **Website Analytics** and the dashboard's **Website Traffic** widget. You can use Fathom on its own, or keep GA4 or Plausible connected too and switch between them.

## Before you start

You need a site already collecting data in Fathom, access to the Fathom API on your account, and permission to manage integrations for your ChatFeatured project. This integration reads your existing analytics. It does not install Fathom's tracking script.

## Connect Fathom

  <Step title="Create an API key">
    In Fathom, open **Settings → API** and click **Create new**. Name the key and choose its permissions. **Read only (all sites)** or a **site-specific** key is enough. Copy the key when it is shown, because Fathom will not display it again.

    Select your project in ChatFeatured, then go to **Integrations → Website analytics → Fathom Analytics**.

    You can also choose **Connect your analytics** from Website Analytics or the Website Traffic widget.

    Paste your **API key** and click **Find my sites** to choose from the sites the key can see.

    Site-specific keys cannot list sites. Enter the **Site ID** by hand instead. It is the short code in your Fathom tracking snippet and site settings, such as `ABCDEFGH`.

    Click **Connect Fathom Analytics**. ChatFeatured checks that the key can read the site before saving anything.

    Click **View website analytics**. Fathom becomes the selected provider for this project in your browser.

## What you can see

* Visitors, pageviews, and daily trends.
* AI referral traffic by platform, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot.
* Landing pages, traffic sources, bounce rate, and average visit duration.
* Conversions from the events you track in Fathom.

### How Fathom's numbers map

Fathom does not measure sessions. **Sessions** and **Users** both show Fathom's visits, which is the number Fathom's own dashboard labels visitors. Expect them to match each other, and to differ from GA4 or Plausible for the same dates.

**Conversions** counts completions of your Fathom events, read from the first 10 events on the site. ChatFeatured's conversion rate divides conversions by visits.

**Revenue** is not read from Fathom yet and displays as **—**.

AI referrals are recognized from the campaign source (`utm_source`) first and the referring site second. A visit with neither cannot be attributed to an AI platform.

### Freshness and API usage

Reports are reused for up to 30 minutes, so a number can trail Fathom's dashboard by that long. The window is deliberate. Fathom counts every API request toward your plan's pageviews and limits each account to 600 requests an hour, so ChatFeatured keeps its request count low. Opening Website Analytics with nothing cached makes about 20 requests.

## Test, update or disconnect

**Test connection** re-checks the saved key against Fathom and shows the site name when it works. Use it after rotating keys or changing permissions in Fathom.

To rotate a key or change sites, enter a new key, pick the site and click **Update connection**. The saved key is never displayed again. A successful update clears cached reports so the next request uses the new connection.

To remove the integration, click **Disconnect** and confirm. This deletes the saved key, the site, and cached reports from ChatFeatured. Your Fathom account and data are untouched, and any other connected provider can still be selected.

## Troubleshooting

| Issue | What to check |
| - | - |
| The key is rejected | Confirm the full key was copied and that it has not been deleted in Fathom. |
| Find my sites fails | The key may be limited to one site. Enter the site ID by hand. |
| The site is not found | Check the site ID against your Fathom site settings. IDs are letters and numbers only. |
| Reports are empty | Check that Fathom is collecting traffic for the site and selected date range. |
| No AI referrals appear | The selected period may have no recognized AI sources. Visits without a referrer or campaign source cannot be attributed. |
| Conversions show zero | Conversions come from Fathom events. Create events in Fathom and send them from your site. |
| A request is rate limited | Wait a minute and try again. Other tools using the same Fathom account share its API allowance. |
| Connection controls are unavailable | Ask a project administrator with integration management permission to connect Fathom. |
